Bands
Mission
Statement:
It
is the mission of the Tates Creek Band Program to provide musical
experiences which help students acquire the knowledge, skills,
attitudes, and values necessary to become independent musicians,
creative individuals, lifelong participants in music making, informed
consumers of music, and supporters of music and music education.
Concert Band Program
The concert band program at Tates Creek
High School plays a crucial role in the success of all other reaches
of the band program. Students experience the most musical growth
and development during concert season and are constantly working
to better their ensemble performing ability.

Symphonic
Band
The Symphonic Band at Tates Creek is composed of some of
the most talented musicians in the school. Students are
admitted into Symphonic Band by audition and receive advanced
credit for it, as it is now a weighted class. The Symphonic
Band performs challenging musical literature and has consistently
earned distinguished ratings at KMEA concert band events
and performed at the KMEA In-Service Convention in February
2005. The Symphonic Band has also performed at a Bands of
America Regional Concert Band Festival in March of 2001. The
Symphonic Band is under the direction of Dee Bishop. |

Concert
Band
The Concert Band is composed mainly of younger, less experienced
musicians. With this ensemble, the emphasis is on developing
the students' musical and technical ability on their instrument
and also on playing into the ensemble. The Concert Band
has consistently earned distinguished ratings at KMEA concert
events and performed at a Bands of America Regional Concert
Band Festival in March 2001. The Concert Band is under

Percussion Ensemble
The Percussion Ensemble at Tates Creek
is a relatively new group. We've always had percussionists,
but it was only in the fall of 2000 that a "Percussion Class"
was added to the schedule. Percussionists at Tates Creek
are enrolled only in the Percussion class unless they play
a wind instrument also. The percussion ensemble works diligently
to perfect their marching show in the fall. For the remainder
of the year, instructor Greg Strouse works with students
on every aspect of percussion performance. During the past
winter they formed an Indoor Drumline that competed with
similar groups . The percussion ensemble traditionally gives
a concert in May.

| Jazz
Band
The Jazz Band at Tates Creek is one
of the favorite ensembles among the students. Each year,
the jazz band performs "gigs" for the school and throughout
the community, a favorite gig being the swing dance at the
end of the school year, usually held at the Marriott. This
group meets every other day from 7:30-8:30 AM. Students
in Jazz Band receive a full academic credit towards graduation. The
Jazz Band is under the direction of Dee Bishop. |

Marching Band
The Tates Creek High School Marching
Commodores are one of the finest AAAAA bands in Kentucky,
composed of approximately 150 marching members and 16-20 color
guard each year. While the schedule varies from year to year,
the band usually competes in several KMEA contests, KMEA state
finals, and one BOA regional. Under the direction of Mr. Dee
Bishop, and Mr. Aaron Cunningham, these students begin work
every July in a 3 week band camp, followed by a rigorous rehearsal
schedule that extends to the end of marching season in October.
A support staff of seven specialized instructors and the Band
Boosters are essential to keep things marching along! |

Color
Guard
The Tates Creek Band really puts the
Color in the Color Guard. From beautiful dresses to colorful
flags, the guard adds that needed visual punch to every show.
Along with masterful skills of rifle and saber handling, they
dazzle audiences all through the marching season. Dedication
is a key as the Color Guard starts a week earlier than the
rest of the band during summer band camp in order to prepare
for the upcoming fall show. The color guard is under the direction
of Johnny Harris and a staff including Lee Eachus and Brandon
Smith. |
